Wade L. GriffinFrames on the Fence
I was born and raised a New Orleans artist. I show up every day and hang my original art on the fence at Jackson Square in the French Quarter. It's an open air park and plaza in front of Saint Louis Cathedral, with me and other artists selling on the fence, plus tarot readers, performers, and musicians. Each of my pieces are just as much a part of Jackson Square as any other fixture surrounding it. I'm a survivor. I grew up and continue to reside in Central City, one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in New Orleans. It’s where my wife and I are raising our daughter. Yes, I see the crime, the drugs, and the prostitution, but I also see the brighter side of life—the resilient people, the family, and the roots that run far deeper than any criminal vein. |
I lost my home in Hurricane Katrina. But what the storm swept away, I rebuilt with my own hands—literally. Every shutter, every baseboard, and every wall, inside and out. And once I was done renovating my home, I started renovating others. But instead of discarding the remnants, I saved them, recognizing the link they represent between New Orleans' past and its rebirth. The son of a carpenter, I learned the trade of woodworking as a child, a tool I now use to frame my paintings.
From the scraps of the storm, I create the frames for my art.
